CHEST PAIN

CHEST PAIN
Most of the people come across with chest pain on various occasions. Then we are perplexed on the reason for such pain. In general it is attributed to heart attack. The very thought of heart attack increases the tension and worsen the situation. Anyhow it is a medical emergency to consider it seriously.

Causes of chest pain range from non serious to serious life threatening heart diseases. They can be apportioned as shown below:
Gastrointestinal 42%, coronary artery disease 31%, musculoskeletal 28%.

Acute coronary syndrome refers to various conditions due to reduced blood flow in the coronary arteries causing feeble performance of heart muscles or death at worst condition.

Unstable angina occurs at rest or with minimum exertion and lasts for more than 20 minutes. It may get repeated within a month with more severity. Myocardial infarction occurs (heart attack) when blood supply to coronary arteries is stopped due to blocks.

Aortic dissection occurs when inner wall of aorta causes blood to flow between layers of the wall forcing them to move apart causing severe tearing pain. It causes reduced supply of blood to other vital organs leading to death.
