Aorta is the main artery in human body rising from left ventricles of the human heart. It extends downwards to abdomen and then split into two small arteries. It carries oxygenated blood to all parts of the body.
When a dissection in the inner wall of aorta takes place it forces
the two layers split apart. Sever abdomen
pain or chest pain is the symptom of this occurrence. The other organs of the
body will starve for oxygenated blood and cells will start dying.
When dissection occurs blood is forced between the two layers
of aorta and causes widening of the layers. This type of disease is common with
people with high blood pressure and connective tissue diseases. When blood
pressure range is beyond 140/90 continuously it gives rise to dissection.
Aortic dissection is rare in the order of 3 to 100,000
people. Males dominate than women in getting this disease.
People who have undergone open heart bypass surgery are
susceptible to get aortic dissection.
Treatment for this disease is mostly surgical. The objective of surgical treatment is to
remove the most damaged portion and replace it with artificial rings, tubes or
valves.
Replacement of damaged section of aorta is by sutureless vascular
ring connector. It is made of reinforced dacron graft. Vascular ring connector
is made of a titanic used as a stent in the vascular graft to gain immediate
blood sealed.
The long term follow
up in individuals who survive aortic dissection lies in absolute control of
blood pressure. Systolic pressure below 130 carries better safety.
Of all the people with aortic dissection 40% die straight
away before reaching hospital. 5 – 20% die during surgery or postoperative period.
